MURPHY WILL WORK TO CREATE A PRO-JOBS CLIMATE IN MASSACHUSETTS
Murphy Proposes Easing Rules on Freelancers
Easton, MA –
Today Dan Murphy, Easton Selectman and Republican nominee for State Representative in the 11th Plymouth district, announced that when elected he will work to modify the rules on independent contractors and freelancers.
“Massachusetts has been losing jobs over th e past two months. Unemployment numbers have ticked up when they should have been dropping due to seasonal employment opportunities. Our next State Representative must have a plan to grow jobs and stabilize our economy,” said Murphy. “One factor holding back job creation is the state’s stringent rules for being an independent contractor. This cuts down employers being able to sub out work. By making some small changes we can help more people get back into the work force and try new careers.”
As a tax accountant Murphy routinely sees how the rules for independent contractors impede businesses from hiring freelancers. These freelancers many times get full time employment when the employer realizes the benefit and the need. Allowing people to freelance gives them a foot in the door and experience. As our State Representative, Murphy will use his extensive knowledge to modify the definition of independent contractors.
“We could create thousands of new opportunities if we just made some changes to the definition of a freelance worker. This is just a common sense reform,” said Murphy. “It will be helpful to people thinking about a career change, recent graduates, and small business owners.”
“Our state ranks number one underemployed people. These are people who have had to take lesser jobs out of their field or a pay cut. Redefining independent contractor will greatly improve their chances for getting out of the underemployment doldrums,” added Murphy.
Dan Murphy is currently serving his second term as a Selectman and has previously served as a member of the Easton Finance Committee. He was born in Brockton and attended the Kennedy Elementary School before moving to Easton. He graduated from Boston College, and now lives in Easton with his wife, Erica, and three young children, the oldest of whom is attending Easton Public Schools.
Murphy owns a tax, accounting and payroll business, located in Easton, and remains active in community organizations and businesses in the area. He is a member of the Brockton Rotary Club and the Easton YMCA Board of Governors, and is a corporator at the North Easton Savings Bank. He is also a member and former Board member of the Easton Chamber of Commerce.
